The president elect has started announcing his picks for cabinet and other important positions in the executive branch. And each picks is more astonishing and controversial than the previous one. I am not planning on going through all of his picks here, but just mentioning a few will help appreciate the scope of the disaster.
- “Border Czar”: Tom Homan, whose answer to the question of whether there is a way to implement the mass deportations without separating families was: sure there is, the families can be deported together. (You can search for this interview, I believe with Fox News, online, using some of the above keywords.)
- Defense secretary: Pete Hegseth, a veteran, whose service is certainly appreciated, but currently a Fox host/contributor. I am not sure about his rank during his service, but based on his level of contributions to Fox, I doubt it was high enough to warrant a very sensitive position as the defense secretary.
- Secretary of homeland security: Kristi Noem, famous for killing her dog (reported in her own book) because she wasn’t obedient enough. Imagine how she will try to secure the security in the homeland! I certainly don’t want to witness a scene in which one of her subordinates, or any citizen for that matter, objects to something she says.
- Department of Government Efficiency: Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy
- I don’t know much about Ramaswamy’s resume, other than the fact that (as a former colleague of mine used to say) he knows which a$$ to kiss. I remember the video he posted right after the Colorado Supreme Court ruling that disqualified Trump from being on the primary ballot according to the 14th Amendment. In that video, Ramaswamy was so worked up and pretending to be outraged about the presumed injustice that suggested every GOP primary candidate should drop out of the race if Trump is not allowed to be on the ballot. My comment on that video at the time was “nice job auditioning for the VP position.” He of course did not get the VP position (although he might have been a better candidate than Vance), but at least he got this one. One thing I am surprised is that how come Trump does not consider him as one of those immigrants who are “poisoning the blood” of our nation!
- But as for Musk, it is well known that his approach is mostly trial and error. He pushes cost savings to the limit until it breaks something, then backs up a little bit, and try another direction. That might have worked with Tesla (I am guilty of and embarrassed about owning a Tesla myself, but I bought that when he had not lost his marbles yet). It kind of worked for Space X as well, although, after three unsuccessful launches and explosions, it ran the company to the brink of bankruptcy before he got lucky in a fourth trial. I don’t want to undermine his capabilities in ultimately delivering in the case of Tesla and Space X (not so much for the rest of his companies though), and I do believe he deserves credit. But his approach of trial and error for cost savings in the government may have dire effects, both in the form of serious interruptions in the government services to the citizens, as well as funding of important organizations, which if interrupted, may affect the lives of thousands if not millions of Americans.
- Deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser: Stephen Miller, I guess I don’t need to say anything about him. Just watch him talk about anything, and you will see the hatred and anger oozing from every pore of his face. His extreme views on mass deportations and other inhumane measures should not come as surprise. As far as his qualifications, I have not seen a resume of his, but I am sure he would have put it out proudly if there was anything noticeable in there.
- HHS secretary: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. this one is more like trusting a wolf to watch the sheep. Whatever RFK stands for goes directly against health and human safety, from extreme anti-vaccine views that goes directly against sensible health measures, to intentions to remove food safety regulations such a requirement for pasteurizing milk, which goes against human safety. So if Trump’s goal with his nominations is to go directly against each department’s mission statement, I think he has no doubt achieved it with this one.
- Attorney general: Matt Gaetz, this one is probably the most outrageous and questionable one. The timing of the announcement, immediately following which he resigned from the House of Representatives as a Florida Congressman, seemed more like a stunt to save him from the embarrassing ethics report that was about to be released on Friday. I still believe Trump is not very serious about this nomination, as it is not very likely for him to be confirmed by the senate, but then again I may be wrong, as Trump has literally threatened any GOP senator who might try to stand against confirming any of his nominees.
Now, you might ask what these nominations have anything to do with the title of this post. To me , it is obvious: neither Trump nor any of these cronies of him seem to be capable of appreciating the absurdity of these nominations. They don’t seem to understand what qualifications are needed for each of these highly sensitive positions. I am sure even if Trump had appointed, e.g., Kristi Noem, as the head of NASA, she would’ve gladly accepted it, without hesitating for a second and thinking about whether she has the qualifications for that job or not. The only thing that is important for Trump in these nominations is loyalty, not qualification. And the only thing that is important for the nominees, is power, not the capability to actually do the job. So they are all “blissful” in their absolute “ignorance”.
